For your stocking-stuffing convenience, Skillet has made the Cascade People's Center its bacon jam pickup station for the next two Saturdays. For each bacon jam jar sold, $1 will be donated to the Center. Hot chocolate and, of course, The Burger, will also be on hand. In other Cascade People's Center news, they are holding a warm winter clothes drive this week. Help people stay warm this winter by donating new or gently-used items such as blankets and sleeping bags, jackets, shoes and boots, hats and scarves, gloves and mittens, new socks and stuff for kids. The donated items will be distributed Friday, December 18, 2009 from 11:00 am - 2:00 pm at the Cascade People's Center (309 Pontius Ave N). Great City is holding its next brownbag this Thursday, November 19, and it's all about the SLU Urban Design Framework. If you haven't been paying attention, here's a good opportunity to get caught up!
The massively renovated 415 Westlake had its grand opening today. Unfortunately, I overslept and missed the festivities, but I'll do my best to gather some photos of the event. The website explains 415 Westlake as a fresh canvas for your next special event, or a place to just hang out and enjoy some chocolate—referring to the new chocolate cafe opening in the space. See our post from earlier this year for more information on Union Church's vision for the building.
If you're familiar with the Stomping Ground pub crawls (they do 4 per year), then you know the deal: 6 drinks at 6 bars, $25 prepaid or $30 at the door. It's also a drink contest between the bars—you get a choice of their special drink or a beer, and you vote for the best drink at the end of the night. Proceeds benefit Immanuel Community Services Food Bank, and this annual event provides them with more food than any other event throughout the year. You can pay the prepay price ($25) at the door if you bring 3 or more cans of food. Line up will be announced closer to the event, but past locations have included Paddy Coyne's, Victory Lounge, Southlake Grill, Laadla, Tutta Bella's and 13 Coins. See evite for more details and to RSVP. It was so good the first time, the Fairview 400 Block Open House is back for Round 2 this Thursday starting at 4:30pm. Appetizers by As You Like It Catering and beer courtesy of Two Beers Brewing. This event is free thanks to Pilates Seattle, Inner Chapters (The Southlake Sponsor) and Cushing Terrell. In case you missed last Tuesday's Candidate Forum at Mirabella or just want to learn more about the candidates' positions on important neighborhood and city issues, here are a couple of opportunities you may want to check out: Mike McGinn Town Hall Seattle mayor candidates on South Lake Union issues at Cascade Area Business Neighbors Quarterly Breakfast Meeting DiscoverSLU.com, Vulcan's neighborhood marketing website has received a major facelift. The site is also a lot more functional than the splash page of old, including the ability to write your own blog posts (I wonder where they got that idea). All in all, I like the updated look and extra content, and the flickr Pictobrowser is a great feature. The 'Advertisements' and 'Sponsored Links' sections aren't fooling anyone though. How about advertising here instead? :) Scraps Dog Bakery is on the plaza level of the 2200 Westlake complex, right above WholeFoods. We opened at the end of 2006 and have been thriving in our developing community here in South Lake Union ever since. We love the area and the support that we've received from community residents and business owners alike. For that support we want to say a big thank you! Last year we were fortunate enough to win the Best of Western Washington contest, put on by Evening Magazine on KING Television. We tried really hard this year, and I hope we've done what it takes to again receive the title of Best Pet Supply store in Western Washington. In order to win this year, we need to get the word out and get voters! For those who have experienced the shop and think it deserves to win again this year, please cast your vote at http://best.king5.com/scraps/biz/65184. I encourage readers to review the KING5 Best-of site and seek out other South Lake Union businesses that are vying for... This Friday, folks nationwide will be turning parking spaces into green spaces for the annual Park(ing) Day event. Seattle's FeetFirst organizes the effort locally, and makes it easy to create a park and take back some of the concrete jungle normally controlled by cars. South Lake has a few on Westlake Ave. to check out, or you can head up to Capitol Hill and see the "Central Park" at 500 E. Pine along with others. Here's a map of our area, and a full map can be found here. As covered here before, Cornish College of the Arts wants to acquire Virgnia Court to incorporate into its campus, but the deal has become complicated with legal issues. Unfortunately, nearly 6 months after this was initially reported in the Puget Sound Business Journal, the issue remains unresolved. The property lies on Virginia St, which is one of the routes between Cascade and downtown. As last reported, the property owners had gone into bankruptcy, so nobody is currently maintaining the now unoccupied apartment building. The property currently has scaffolding over the sidewalk along Virginia St. and Terry Ave., and has attracted graffiti, trash, and loiterers. As the legal issues drag on, this eyesore impacts the quality of the neighborhood. While graffiti has been sprayed over, perhaps by the city or by the owners, the scaffolding may provide the cover and sign of unoccupancy that invites more. Do any readers know what we can do to keep this property clean and to explore the possibility of removing the scaffolding? Seattle City Council member Tom Rasmussen, chair of the Parks Committee, rings the opening bell at last Thursday's Market at 3 PM. Obviously I'm a little late to the party, but I got this FW: in my inbox today and it's one of the few FW:'s I've ever FW:ded along. You should do it too!
A group of 9 artists are preparing to paint a mural on the south facing (exterior) wall of the Cascade People's Center. With community input, they have chosen a theme--Cascade past, present, and future. We are moving forward with the Parks Department to finalize a design and they need your help to make this project successful. Do you have extra supplies from building/art projects? Can you volunteer or help keep volunteers happy with donations of cold drinks and food/snacks for the painting days? Art For Animals is dedicated to helping raise the profile of those organizations that advance animal welfare in the Northwest. Over the past few years, bike share programs have swept through Europe and become a critical part of the local transportation network. They were designed to be an on-demand mobility option, enabling people to check out a bike from a designated bike share station and return it to any designated bike share station after their trip. The most popular program, the Velib in Paris, boasts 24,000 bikes in over 1,800 kiosks. Today, cities throughout North America are adapting the bike share concept to meet their growing mobility needs. Over the last couple of years, King County Metro has been toying with the idea of setting up a bike share program for our region. This summer, Metro has teamed up with the City, Cascade Bicycle Club and Vulcan to host an expo with different bike share vendors who will share their kiosks, bikes and ideas. The expo will be held right in our hood Tuesday, August 11th from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm at the Discovery Center (101 Westlake Ave. N). Here's a batch of superb photos by of National Night Out parties across the city by Neighborlogs intern Lucas Anderson.
Celebrate National Night Out with Cascade People’s Center on Tuesday August 4 from 4:00 - 8:00 pm. This fun family event will feature games, bouncy castle, barbeque, live music and more–and it’s absolutely free! The Cascade Block Party has also teamed up with Whole Foods Market to host the Cascade Burger Challenge, a preliminary competition open to the residents of the Cascade neighborhood with the winner going on to compete in the Audacious Burger Challenge held at the South Lake Union Block Party on Friday, 7 August 2009. Over at the P-I, Aubrey Cohen posted an update on Weber Thompson's Terry Thomas headquarters: "Passive cooling works, to a point." "A lot of us stuck around to around 3:30, 4 o'clock," said Scott Thompson, a principal with the architecture firm Weber Thompson, which designed the building and uses it for its headquarters. "At 90 (degrees), it's time to clear out." On the other hand, the LEED Platinum certified office space used an unbelievable 49.14% less energy than the national average. Did you all survive the heat? How many people braved jumping into Lake Union?
