This week in SLU transportation issues

  • The City Council approved the Mayor's proposed $1.45 million loan to cover S.L.U.T. operating costs, and Nick Licata succeeded in passing an amendment that implores the Mayor to consider alternative ways to address shortfalls in the future, including a tax on local South Lake Union businesses and property owners. [More]

  • SDOT Director Grace Crunican walked into the lion's den with an op-ed in support of 2-Way Mercer on the very anti-2-Way Mercer publication Crosscut. Crunican gives updated capacity and travel time estimates that might appease some critics and addresses the issue of Bridging the Gap dollars being used for one large project. [More]

  • Seattle Times got a feel for our future Mayor's (whoever that may be) opinion of the 2-Way Mercer project. In a bout of populism, Mallahan opposed 2-Way Mercer during the primaries, but is now coming around calling it "a very good neighborhood development project". Taking a cue from Mr. Licata on the streetcar (see first bullet), Mahallan proposed a local improvement district (LID) tax to help close the 2-Way Mercer's funding gap. However, in this case, the consensus seems to be that a LID wouldn't work as local property owners (ie. Vulcan) have already put up $30 million.

McGinn has sat on the sidelines for the most part, eagerly pointing out Mallahan's apparent contradiction in initially opposing 2-Way Mercer while at the same time supporting a waterfront tunnel. Most agree the two projects go hand in hand. On the whole, McGinn supports the 2-Way Mercer project but is concerned about its cost. [More]

To grill the candidates for Mayor and the open City Council seats on 2-Way Mercer and other issues important to South Lake Union (up-zone, anyone?), be sure to attend next Tuesday's Candidate Forum at Mirabella.

Get political?
Hey, shall the blog get political? Maybe you could invite people to submit candidate writeups after the Candidate Forum at Mirabella.

RE: Get political?
Gladly. I'll likely do a write-up on where the candidates stand on SLU issues after the debate. Everyone's welcome to follow on with a comment or make a post of their own.
