Aurora North Portal Concept Designs

If construction of Amazon's headquarters and Mercer demolition aren't enough construction for you, there's another big project to look forward to: the SR-99 bored tunnel. The North Portal Working Group has released some initial concept designs for construction detours and final configuration, including connection of John, Thomas and Harrison Streets. These designs are very preliminary, so expect changes before the project begins, tentatively scheduled for mid-2011 and finishing in 2016.

I rather like it
VERY interesting. I appreciate the post. I live in the uptown area around 5th & 6th and think this is pretty appealing, overall (I'm sure it's not without some downfalls of course). My impression:
• Goodbye Broad street! Hello new 99 cross streets at Harrison, Thomas and John! I absolutely love that.
• Looks like the new 6th street addition would seriously impact the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s ability to build a 3rd building according to their current renderings. That doesn't bother me :)
• Love the 99 south onramp stemming from a new, Republican & 6th intersection – that provides more options for traffic movement through the neighborhood (and hopefully fewer jams on Mercer)
• Bummer that Mercer would continue to run under 99 (not a pleasant pedestrian experience)
• I assume the entrance to the tunnel moves north by 3 blocks because the city has easier ability to gain right-of-way - the location shown on this map is basically a vacant lot with lots of junk on it (maybe Seattle Center property?).
