Vacant buildings on loan to the arts community

Developer Blume Co. has grand plans for its properties at Mercer & Yale—a 780,000 sq. ft. biotech campus, in fact. But with a dreary economy, they aren't exactly rushing to break ground. So instead of letting the buildings sit vacant for 2 or 3 years creating unnecessary blight, Blume has decided to make the space available to arts organizations and co-ops. Pretty cool if you ask me.

They're calling the converted arts space "The Office". Here is the posting on Artist Trust:

"The Office" artist studios and exhibit space is available in South Lake Union!

Air Conditioned, studios with views, 4 interior art galleries, 1 street level gallery, kitchens, freight elevator, 2 loading docks, close to cafes and clubs. Perfect for painters, jewelry designers, photographers, musicians and performance artists, etc. Contact: dantesseattle@gmail.com

Below are exterior shots of the buildings:

"The Office" is the best thing that can happen to SLU! Good for you Blume!
Truly, the main developer in SLU Vulcan, prides itself for being about community development. Even though they have supported a number of things in SLU, Blume's idea is the ultimate "Don't TALK about it; BE about it" move.
It is sad to see the empty, crane-filled streets with so many vacant retail spaces. There is so much private property in SLU that is being unused! Giving space to creative people can make a real impact in the future of SLU, making it at the same time, an extremely attractive place to live.
Blume Co understands very well the concept of community investment: compromising profit can bring a greater return in the future. I hope Vulcan gets the hint and start doing the same. We, residents, need it so badly!
