The first Early Design Guidance meetings for Vulcan's 7-story, 330 unit apartment building incorporating the historic Supply Laundry building are this Wednesday, December 3rd (see notice for meeting details).
Preferred Scheme
The preferred scheme (pictured above) includes alley ways running north-south and east-west, much like Alley 24, with a large open space / courtyard next to the smokestack (pictured below). The ground floor of the new structure will include a mixture of residential stoops, live/work lofts, and retail. The old Supply Laundry building will be converted to office with some retail.
View of the Courtyard
The design proposal (big pdf) indicates that Vulcan will pursue LEED Gold, with green features to include the Swale on Yale, winter gardens / pea patch, rainwater harvesting, and the adaptive re-use of a historic landmark.
###
And a project of special interest to Rollin Street buyers with eastern-facing units just popped up on the radar: a six-story structure with 98 residential units and ground floor retail is being planned 975 John St, which is in the alley way behind the north end of Rollin Street.
Based on city records, this lot was last owned by the Low Income Housing Institute before being sold to a partnership in September 2007. No word yet whether this project include affordable housing or not, but we'll probably find out at the Early Design Guidance meeting December 17th (see notice).
From this Google Streetview shot, you can see the existing two-story building which appears to have been occupied by Howard S. Wright during construction of Rollin Street.
